Senior Alert Systems and Medical Alert Devices FAQ

    1. Do You want a Home-Based or Mobile System?

Initially, medical alert systems were created to work inside your house, with your landline telephone.

And you can still go that route. Numerous companies likewise now provide the option of home-based systems that work over a cellular network, for those who may not have a landline.

With these systems, pushing the wearable call button permits you to speak with a dispatcher through a base unit located in your home.

Lots of companies provide mobile options, too. You can use these systems at home, however they’ll likewise permit you to call for help while you’re out and about.

These run over cellular networks and incorporate GPS innovation. In this manner, if you get lost or press the call button for aid but are unable to talk, the monitoring service can find you.

    1. Should You Add a Fall-Detection Feature?

Some companies offer the option of automatic fall detection, for an additional monthly fee. Manufacturers say these devices sense falls when they occur and automatically contact the dispatch center, just as they would if you had pressed the call button.

    1. Whats the Cost?

Fees. Beware of complicated pricing plans and hidden fees. Look for a company with no extra fees related to equipment, shipping, installation, activation, or service and repair. Don’t fall for scams that offer free service or “donated or used” equipment.
Contracts. You should not have to enter into a long-term contract. You should only have to pay ongoing monthly fees, which should range between $25 and $45 a month (about $1 a day). Be careful about paying for service in advance, since you never know when you’ll need to stop the service temporarily (due to a hospitalization, for instance) or permanently.
Guarantee and cancellation policies. Look for a full money-back guarantee, or at least a trial period, in case you are not satisfied with the service. And you’ll want the ability to cancel at any time with no penalties (and a full refund if monthly fees have already been paid).
Discounts. Ask about discounts for multiple people in the same household, as well as for veterans, membership organizations, medical insurance or via a hospital, medical or care organization. Ask if the company offers any discount options or a sliding fee scale for people with lower incomes.
Insurance. For the most part, Medicare and private insurance companies will not cover the costs of a medical alert. In some states Medicaid may cover all or part of the cost. You can check with your private insurance company to see if it offers discounts or referrals.
Tax deductions. Check with your tax professional to find out if the cost of a medical alert is tax deductible as a medically necessary expense.

Rome is a city in Oneida County, New York, United States, located in the central part of the state. The population was 33,725 at the 2010 census. Rome is one of two principal cities in the Utica–Rome Metropolitan Statistical Area, which lies in the "Leatherstocking Country" made famous by James Fenimore Cooper's Leatherstocking Tales, set in frontier days before the American Revolutionary War. Rome is in New York's 22nd congressional district.

The city developed at an ancient portage site of Native Americans, including the historic Iroquois. It continued to be strategically important to Europeans who also used the main 18th and 19th-century waterways, based on the Mohawk and Hudson rivers, that connected New York City and the Atlantic seaboard to the Great Lakes. The original European settlements developed around fortifications erected in the 1750s to defend the waterway, in particular the British Fort Stanwix (1763).

Following the war, the city began to develop with the construction of the Rome Canal in 1796, to connect Wood Creek (leading from Lake Ontario) and the Mohawk River. In the same year the Town of Rome was formally created as a section of Oneida County. For a time, the small community next to the canal was informally known as Lynchville, after the original owner of the property.[3][4] The Town of Rome was converted into a city by the New York State Legislature on February 23, 1870.[5] The residents have called Rome the City of American History.[6]

The person in distress presses a button, which sends a signal. Typically this will put an emergency call to the numbers currently programmed into the system.

When an individual takes the call, he is asked to enter in a number. If the number is gone into correctly, then the system assumes that it is a live individual and not an answering machine. The system will play the message for the person raising the call.

In a 2-way system, a 2-way interaction is established between the individual in distress and the emergency alert provider. This is why it is essential you select a reliable company. It is well worth the few extra dollars spent each month, in return for quality service and reaction.

Some 2-way company will offer extra service. For instance some alarm business will bring up medical records of the client to determine if he has any known medical issues. This ensures immediate service and can avoid a great deal of trouble and disappointment.

Panic buttons for the elderly can be used as a bracelet, pendant or on the belt. They are normally water proof so there is no issues with the emergency alert systems getting ruined due to moisture.

Senior Alert Systems and Medical Alert Devices FAQ

      1. Do You want a Home-Based or Mobile System?

Originally, medical alert systems were designed to work inside your home, with your landline telephone.

And you can still go that route. Numerous companies also now use the alternative of home-based systems that work over a cellular network, for those who may not have a landline.

With these systems, pressing the wearable call button permits you to speak with a dispatcher through a base unit located in your house.

However many business use mobile options, too. You can use these systems in the house, however they’ll also allow you to call for help while you’re out and about.

These run over cellular networks and incorporate GPS technology. By doing this, if you get lost or push the call button for assistance but are not able to talk, the tracking service can find you.
