John Hinckley Jr.

John Warnock Hinckley Jr. (born May 29, 1955) is an American man who, on March 30, 1981, attempted to assassinate U.S. President Ronald Reagan in Washington, D.C. He wounded Reagan with a bullet that ricocheted and hit him in the chest. He also wounded police officer Thomas Delahanty and Secret Service agent Tim McCarthy, and critically wounded Press Secretary James Brady, who died from complications of his injuries 33 years later.

Reported to have been driven by an obsessive fixation on Jodie Foster, Hinckley was found not guilty by reason of insanity and remained under institutional psychiatric care until September 2016. Public outcry over the verdict led to the Insanity Defense Reform Act of 1984, which altered the rules for consideration of mental illness of defendants in Federal Criminal Court proceedings in the United States. He was released from institutional psychiatric care on September 10, 2016, and lives with his mother.[1]

John Warnock Hinckley Jr. was born on May 29, 1955, in Ardmore, Oklahoma,[2][3] and moved with his wealthy family to Dallas, Texas, at the age of 4. His late father was John Warnock Hinckley Sr., president of World Vision United States, and chairman and president of the Vanderbilt Energy Corporation. His mother is Jo Ann (Moore) Hinckley. He has two older siblings: sister Diane and brother Scott. After graduating from Vanderbilt University, Scott Hinckley became vice president of his father's oil business. Their sister, Diane, graduated from Southern Methodist University in Dallas.[2]

Leon, New York

Leon is a town in Cattaraugus County, New York, United States. The population was 1,365 at the 2010 census.[3] The name is derived from the former Kingdom of León in Spain, though it is pronounced like the American first name, "Lee-on". The town is on the western border of the county, northwest of the city of Salamanca.

The area that would become the town was first settled around 1819. The town of Leon was founded in 1832 from a part of the town of Conewango.

The Leon Grange No. 795 and Leon United Methodist Church are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.[4][5]

Fort Ann, New York

Fort Ann is a town in Washington County, New York, United States. It is part of the Glens Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area.[6] The town population was 6,417 at the 2000 census.[3] The name is derived indirectly from Queen Anne, and directly from a community in the town.[citation needed]

The town contains a village, also called Fort Ann, located in its southeast corner.[7]

Fort Ann is located on the historic route linking the French and English colonies.

Alcove, New York

Alcove is a hamlet in the town of Coeymans, Albany County, New York. It is a prime example of a 19th-century mill town located at a rural intersection and as such it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places in the Albany area as the Alcove Historic District. The city of Albany's Alcove Reservoir lies to the west of the hamlet.

The history of Alcove is a history of the mills established along the Hannacroix (Haanacrois) Creek. In 1790 an early settler by the name of Casperus Ackerman established the first mill in the area.[2] In 1844 Ephraim Andrews established the Valley Mill for carding of wool and cloth manufacturing along the Hannacroix Creek at the corners of what is now New York State Route 143 and Albany County Route 111.[2][3] It would be expanded in 1848 and converted to the manufacturing of straw paper by John E. Andrews, and in 1854 in partnership with WS Briggs improvements such as steam power were introduced. WS Briggs and Sons was formed as a partnership in control of the mills in 1871 with Briggs' son Amos D. Briggs as proprietor. This partnership would buy other local mills as well, including Ephraim Andrews'. An early name for Alcove was Stephensville, named for Archibald Stephens who at one time owned the Andrews' mill prior to selling it to WS Briggs and Sons. When the post office was established in the hamlet in 1881 it took the name Alcove.[2] The Valley Mill was destroyed by fire in 1892 leaving the 110-foot-tall (34 m) chimney as the only remnant. The chimney is on the National Register of Historic Places and along with 140 acres (0.57 km2) of the hamlet it is a part of the Alcove Historic District. The district was created in 1980 and has eight contributing properties. The Alcove Preservation Association has been attempting to restore the chimney with hopes of creating a pocket park and interpretive historical center.[3]

The Alcove Reservoir was created (1928–1931) by damming the Hannacrois Creek which resulted in the flooding and destruction of the nearby hamlet of Indian Fields. The Indian Fields cemetery was relocated to NY 143 at the northern edge of Alcove.[3]

Pierrepont Manor, New York

Pierrepont Manor is a hamlet and census-designated place in Jefferson County, New York, United States. Its population was 228 as of the 2010 census.[1] Pierrepont Manor has a post office with ZIP code 13674, which opened on November 29, 1843.[3][4]U.S. Route 11 and New York State Route 193 intersect in the community; it is also served by an exit on Interstate 81.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the community has an area of 0.688 square miles (1.78 km2); 0.684 square miles (1.77 km2) of its area is land, and 0.004 square miles (0.010 km2) is water.[1]
