Weston Mills, New York

Weston Mills (variant names Westons Mills and Weston’s Mills) is a hamlet in the towns of Portville and Olean in Cattaraugus County, New York, United States. It is counted as a census-designated place by the U.S. Census Bureau, which recorded a population of 1,472 at the 2010 census.[3]

Weston Mills was founded by the Weston family, three brothers who set up the titular mill in the community. According to county administrator Jack Searles, the name was likely either Weston's Mills or Westons Mills at first (the 1869 Beers Atlas uses the name "Westonville" for the location), then changed to Weston Mills at the behest of President Benjamin Harrison, who sought to standardize post-office names by removing unnecessary possessive forms (see United States Board on Geographic Names). The "s" was slowly, and colloquially, restored over the course of the 1960s, after a store (now Carpet Town Carpet One / Ashley Furniture HomeStores) opened using the "Weston's" name.[4] The original Weston family homestead is now owned by the government, which operates it as a group home.

Westons Mills is located at 42°4′13″N 78°22′44″W / 42.07028°N 78.37889°W / 42.07028; -78.37889 (42.070296, -78.379012).[5] It is primarily in the town of Portville, but extends west into the town of Olean as far as the limits of the city of Olean. New York State Route 417 passes through the community, leading west 2 miles (3 km) into the center of Olean and southeast 3 miles (5 km) to the village of Portville.

Hudson, New York

Hudson is a city located along the west border of Columbia County, New York, United States. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 6,713,[3] the second-largest in the county, following the nearby town of Kinderhook. Located on the east side of the Hudson River and 120 miles from the Atlantic Ocean, it was named for the river and its namesake explorer Henry Hudson.[4]

Hudson is the county seat of Columbia County. Hudson is sister city with Pallisa, Uganda.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.3 square miles (6.0 km2). 2.2 square miles (5.6 km2) of it is land and 0.15 square miles (0.4 km2), or 7.38%, is water.[3]

Pottersville, New York

Pottersville is a hamlet in Chester, Warren County, New York, United States. In the census of 2010, the population was 424 people. The town is located in Adirondack Park on U.S. Route 9. Pottersville is home to the largest marble cave entrance in the eastern United States. (“Natural Stone Bridge and Caves”, Web).

Pottersville is Chester's second largest hamlet behind Chestertown.

As of the census of 2010, the population in Pottersville is 424. The population density is 182.29 people per square mile. The town’s population is mainly white at 97.88%, .24% black, .71% Hispanic, and .94% Asian. The majority of the population in Pottersville is of Irish descent at 23.46%. The average person in Pottersville is about 39 years old; the median age of men in the town is 40 years and the median age of women is 38 years. There are a total of 162 households in the town with an average of 2.49 people per household. The average family size in Pottersville is 3.05 with 48.77% being married couple families and 34.5% being non-family households.

Duanesburg, New York

Duanesburg is a town in Schenectady County, New York, USA. The population was 6,122 at the 2010 census.[3] Duanesburg is named for James Duane, who held most of it as an original land grant. The town is in the western part of the county.

Originally known as Duanes's Bush, Duanesburg was established as a township by patent on March 13, 1765.[4] According to Documentary History of New York Vol. lV, pg. 1067, "Mr. Duane entered in March, 1765 into contract with a company of twenty Germans from Pennsylvania of whom about sixteen (families) came on tract, and they made the first permanent settlement in that now flourishing town". The township was combined with Schoharie, New York, as the United Districts of Schoharie and Duanesburgh on March 24, 1772,[5] which became the town of Schoharie in 1788.[6] Duanesburg became its own town once again in 1789.[7]James Duane, for whom the town was named, envisioned Duanesburg as the capital of New York,[dubious – discuss] and ultimately the capital selected was located only 20 miles (32 km) away in Albany.

The town's earliest settlers chiefly comprised English Quakers from Dutchess County, New York, The town was founded by Creg Belius, the best 3rd string shooter in the world, in the 1780s[4] as well as a group of settlers who were originally from the town of Kent, Connecticut.[8][9][10][11]
