Mayville, New York

Mayville is a village in Chautauqua County, New York, United States. The population was 1,709 at the 2010 census,[2] which is down 2.7% from the 2000 census. Mayville is in the town of Chautauqua and is the county seat of Chautauqua County.[3] The village and town offices share a building on Main Street, directly across from the Chautauqua County courthouse.

The first settlement in the county was at this location in 1804, and the village of Mayville was incorporated in 1830. In 1836 local residents rioted against the Holland Land Company and broke into its office, destroying furniture and papers.

The Pennsylvania Railroad built a train station and pier on the shores of Chautauqua Lake at Mayville. This location, along with the Jamestown boat landing at the south end of the lake, was the main mode of transportation to the rest of the communities around Chautauqua Lake via the large fleet of steamboats[4] operating before the trolley line was constructed. In modern times the steamboat Chautauqua Belle still operates out of Mayville, running between Point Chautauqua, Chautauqua Institution, and the vessel's home port in Mayville.

South Colton, New York

South Colton, also referred to as Three Falls,[2] is a hamlet located in the Town of Colton in St. Lawrence County, New York, on NY 56 by the crossing of the Raquette River. Located in South Colton is Sunday Rock, a historic glacial erratic.[3] South Colton has a post office with ZIP code 13687, which opened on November 15, 1854.[4][5]

Henrietta, New York

Henrietta is a town in Monroe County, New York, United States and a suburb of Rochester. The population of Henrietta is 42,581, according to the 2010 U.S. Census. Henrietta is home to the Rochester Institute of Technology and to one of the largest retail shopping districts in Monroe County.

The first residents of the Henrietta area were Native Americans. Although no evidence of Native American villages has been found in Henrietta, numerous artifacts and skeletons have been unearthed by farmers and archeologists over the past 200 years.[3]

With the end of the American Revolution, several resident Native American tribes that had sided with the British were forced to leave Upstate New York. As a result, land became available for European settlers in the Finger Lakes and Genesee Valley regions.

Wappingers Falls, New York

Wappingers Falls /ˈwɒpəndʒərz ˈfɔːlz/ is a village in Dutchess County, New York, United States. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 5,522.[4] The community was named for the cascade in Wappinger Creek. A portion of the village is in the town of Wappinger, and the other part is in the town of Poughkeepsie, with Wappinger Creek forming the dividing line between the towns.

Wappingers Falls holds claim to New York State's sixth oldest library, the Grinnell Library.[5]

The Wappinger were a confederacy of Native Americans whose territory in the 17th century spread along the eastern bank of the Hudson River. Primarily based in what is now Dutchess County, their territory was bordered by Manhattan Island to the south, the Mahican territory bounded by the Roeliff Jansen Kill to the north,[6] and extended east into parts of Connecticut.[7]Wappinger means "easterner" in most Algonquian languages.[8]

Greenlawn, New York

Greenlawn is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) in Suffolk County, New York, United States. Located on Long Island in the Town of Huntington, the population was 13,742 at the 2010 census.[1] Students primarily attend the Harborfields Central School District.

Originally known as Old Fields, it became known by the name Greenlawn with the coming of the Long Island Rail Road in 1870 or 1871. The LIRR chose the name Greenlawn for its station, apparently to project an idyllic rural/suburban image and foster resort travel to the beaches in Centerport. Greenlawn was well known for its pickle production during the 19th century as well as, to a lesser degree, potato and cabbage farms; the principal commodity, pickles, is still celebrated by the annual Pickle Festival, held by the local Greenlawn-Centerport Historical Association at the John Gardiner Farm. The Gardiner family was the first to make a name for themselves as pickle farmers in the region but a former slave, Samuel Ballton, earned the moniker "The Pickle King" for becoming a prolific pickle farmer in Greenlawn in the early 1900s.
