Nelliston, New York

Nelliston is a village in Montgomery County, New York, United States. The population was 596 at the 2010 census. The name is from members of the Nellis family.

The Village of Nelliston is in the Town of Palatine and is west of Amsterdam.

The Erie Canal passes the village.

Ray Brook, New York

Ray Brook is a hamlet in New York State, United States located on NY 86 between Saranac Lake and Lake Placid in the Town of North Elba in Essex County. It is the site of the Adirondack Park Agency, the District 5 office of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, the Federal Correctional Institution, Ray Brook and the Adirondack Correctional Facility. The New York State Office of Real Property Tax Services - an office within the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance - has an office here as well.

In 1904, it was the site of the first state-operated tuberculosis sanatorium. Subsequent to the development of effective treatments for tuberculosis, the property was used by the Drug Addiction Control Commission for enforcement and treatment in 1971. Later it was used for Olympic staff housing for the 1980 Winter Olympics and for the Olympic Village; after the games it became a new State Prison, and 200 acres (0.81 km2) deeded to the federal government became a new federal prison.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, Region 5, is headquartered in Raybrook; it operates the Meadowbrook Campground across the road from its offices.

Greig, New York

Greig is a town in Lewis County, New York, United States, Named after John Greig,[4] the town was founded in 1828 from land within the boundary of Watson, New York. Originally named Brantingham, the town changed to its present name, February 20, 1832. Brantingham still survives as a hamlet within the boundaries of Greig, as a postal identity and for Brantingham Lake, to the east of town. As of the 2010 Census, the population was 1,199.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 94.3 square miles (244 km2), of which 92.9 square miles (241 km2) is land and 1.4 square miles (3.6 km2) (1.51%) is water.

The eastern town line is the border of Herkimer County, and the western town line is defined by the Black River.

North Chatham, New York

North Chatham is a hamlet in Columbia County, New York, United States. The community is located along New York State Route 203 3.2 miles (5.1 km) south-southwest of Nassau. North Chatham has a post office with ZIP code 12132.[2][3]

Westhampton Beach, New York

The Incorporated Village of Westhampton Beach is an incorporated village on the southeast coast of Long Island. Administratively it is in the town of Southampton, Suffolk County, New York, United States. As of the 2010 census, the village population was 1,721.[4]

The village of Westhampton Beach was incorporated in 1928.[5] In 1938, almost all summer homes on its barrier beach were obliterated by a hurricane resulting in twenty-nine local deaths.

Like most of the shoreline of southern Long Island, the beach at Westhampton Beach was eroding shoreward.[6] This became a political issue in the 1960s. The project to protect the beaches in the area from further erosion was started by the Army Corp of Engineers in 1966, but was only partially completed because of the failure to secure funds from the state and local government. In addition the project design was seriously flawed.[7] As a result, there was increased erosion at the beaches in Westhampton Beach while, up current, the beaches actually grew. During the late 1970s and through the 1980s, beach homes were washed away with every severe storm (nor'easter) that hit the coast. It was only after the nor'easter of November 1992 destroyed over eighty homes, that the Army Corp of Engineers began renewed repair efforts.[7] In the mid-1990s, fifteen historic houses were relocated by the Army Corps of Engineers. The homes were moved off the beach and out of harm's way, at least for a while, but the beach is still eroding and addition damage is incurred with every storm.[7] Additional work was required after Hurricane Sandy in 2012.[8]
