Batavia, New York

Batavia is a city in and the county seat of Genesee County, New York, United States. It is near the center of the county, surrounded by the Town of Batavia, which is a separate municipality. Its population as of the 2010 census was 15,465. The name Batavia is Latin for the Betuwe region of the Netherlands, and honors early Dutch land developers.[2]

The city hosts the Batavia Muckdogs baseball club of the New York–Penn League, at the Dwyer Stadium, at 299 Bank Street. The Muckdogs are an affiliate of the Miami Marlins.[3] They won the 2008 championship. In 2006, a national magazine ranked Batavia third among the nation's micropolitans based on economic development.[4]

The New York State Thruway (Interstate 90) passes north of the city. Genesee County Airport (GVQ) is also north of the city.

Glen Head, New York

Glen Head is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) located within the Town of Oyster Bay in Nassau County, New York. As of the United States 2010 Census, the population of Glen Head was 4,697.

It is essential to note that with the exception of the Incorporated Villages of Old Westbury and Mill Neck; the villages of Brookville, Old Brookville, Upper Brookville, Muttontown and Roslyn Harbor do not have post offices or zip codes of their own. Consequently, areas within these communities are served by the Glen Head post office and thereby use this hamlet merely for mailing addresses, despite the physical address being within the limits of an incorporated village.

Sterling, New York

Sterling is a town in Cayuga County, New York, United States. The population was 3,040 at the 2010 census.[3] Located on the shore of Lake Ontario, the town is named after William Alexander, Lord Stirling, an American general of the Revolutionary War.[citation needed] Sterling is the most northerly town in the county and lies northwest of Syracuse.

The region was formerly part of the territory of the Onondaga, one of the original Five Nations of the Iroquois Confederacy. However, as allies of the British, who were defeated, they were forced to cede most of their lands in New York to the state after the Revolutionary War. This land was made part of the Central New York Military Tract, which was divided and granted as pay to veteran soldiers of the Revolution.

The first European-American settler, Pierre Dumas (also recorded as Peter DeMass), arrived in 1805. The Town of Sterling was formed in 1812 from the Town of Cato.

Piffard, New York

Piffard (also known as Piffardinia) is a census-designated place and hamlet in the town of York, Livingston County, New York, United States.[3] As of the 2010 census, its population was 220.[2] The Zip Code is: 14533.[4]

The Roman Catholic Abbey of the Genesee is near Piffard.[5]

April (giraffe)

April (born 2002) is a reticulated giraffe at the Animal Adventure Park in Harpursville, New York, in the United States. She gained worldwide fame after a live video of her in the late stages of pregnancy, along with the subsequent birth, were put on YouTube. The birth was watched live by nearly 1.2 million viewers.

April was born at the Catskill Game Farm in Catskill, New York. She resided at the farm until it closed in 2006, when she was relocated to Adirondack Animal Land in Broadalbin, New York.[2]

Animal Adventure Park owned by Jordan Patch acquired 13-year-old April shortly after acquiring Oliver, a much younger 3-year-old male giraffe, in 2015. Oliver and April soon mated, which resulted in her pregnancy that normally lasts 15 months.[3] It was Oliver's first siring and April's fourth pregnancy;[4] she had previously mothered three other giraffes, two males and a female named Autumn, with a male giraffe named Stretch.[1] After becoming pregnant, at Animal Adventure Park she became a "viral sensation" in February 2017 while being monitored by a live stream.[5][6][7][8] An estimated 1.2 million viewers watched the live feed of the giraffe giving birth on YouTube; the live feed was sponsored by Toys R Us and Babies R Us, as a play on that chain's mascot, Geoffrey the Giraffe.[4] By the time the camera was shut off, the YouTube feed had accumulated 232 million views.[9] A GoFundMe fundraiser page that initially set a goal of $50,000 sat at more than $135,000 by the time the calf was born. The money is to be used to offset the annual care for the animals and upgrading the giraffe exhibit at the park.[10]
