Richburg, New York

Richburg is a village in Allegany County, New York, United States. The population was 450 at the 2010 census.[2] The village is partly within the boundaries of the towns of Wirt and Bolivar. The community is east of Olean.

Richburg was incorporated in 1881 and was for a time a petroleum "boom town". L. Frank Baum, later the author of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and other stories, was director of a theater, Baum's Opera House, in Richburg from 1881 to 1882. Baum's Opera House was built by Baum's father, an oil executive, expressly to stage original works written by his son. Unfortunately, the theater burned, along with manuscripts of Baum's early plays, in March 1882.[3][4]

Richburg is located in the southern part of Wirt and the northern part of Bolivar in southwestern Allegany County, at 42°5′14″N 78°9′22″W / 42.08722°N 78.15611°W / 42.08722; -78.15611 (42.087226, -78.156080).[5]

Long Beach, New York

Long Beach is a city in Nassau County, New York, United States. Just south of Long Island, it is located on Long Beach Barrier Island, which is the westernmost of the outer barrier islands off Long Island's South Shore. As of the United States 2010 Census, the city population was 33,275. It was incorporated in 1922,[3] and is nicknamed The City By the Sea (as seen in Latin on its official seal). The city of Long Beach is surrounded by Reynolds Channel to the north, east and west, and the Atlantic Ocean to the south. As of January 1, 2018, Michael Tangney is the acting city manager, a position appointed by the City Council. It has been Democratic for many years.[4]

Long Beach's first inhabitants were the Algonquian-speaking Rockaway Indians, who sold the area to English colonists in 1643. While the barrier island was used by baymen and farmers, for fishing and harvesting salt hay, no one lived there year-round for more than two centuries.

In 1837, the barque Mexico, carrying Irish immigrants to New York, ran ashore on New Year's Day.[citation needed]

Lake George (New York)

Lake George, nicknamed the Queen of American Lakes,[2] is a long, narrow oligotrophic lake located at the southeast base of the Adirondack Mountains, in the northeastern portion of the U.S. state of New York. It lies within the upper region of the Great Appalachian Valley and drains all the way northward into Lake Champlain and the St. Lawrence River drainage basin. The lake is situated along the historical natural (Amerindian) path between the valleys of the Hudson and St. Lawrence Rivers, and so lies on the direct land route between Albany, New York and Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The lake extends about 32.2 mi (51.8 km) on a north-south axis, is quite deep, and varies from one to three miles (1.6 to 4.8 km) in width, presenting a significant barrier to east-west travel. Although the year-round population of the Lake George region is relatively small, the summertime population can swell to over 50,000 residents, many in the village of Lake George region at the southern end of the lake.[not verified in body]

Lake George drains into Lake Champlain to its north through a short stream, the La Chute River, with many falls and rapids, dropping 226 feet (69 m) in its 3.5-mile (5.6 km) course—virtually all of which is within the lands of Ticonderoga, New York and near the site of the Fort Ticonderoga. Ultimately the waters flowing via the 106-mile-long (171 km) Richelieu River drain into the St. Lawrence River downstream and northeast of Montreal, and then into the North Atlantic Ocean above Nova Scotia.

Lake George is located in the southeastern Adirondack State Park and is part of the St. Lawrence watershed. Notable landforms include Anthony's Nose, Deer's Leap, Diver's Rock (a 15-foot [4.6 m] jump into the lake), and Double-Diver's (a 30-foot [9.1 m] jump), the Indian Kettles, and Roger's Rock.

DeRuyter, New York

DeRuyter /dəˈraɪtər/ is a town in Madison County, New York, United States. The population was 1,589 at the 2010 census.[2] The town is named after Michiel Adriaenszoon de Ruyter[4] a famous admiral in the Dutch navy. The name de Ruyter (de Ruijter) means "the Rider".

The Town of DeRuyter has a village in it called DeRuyter. The town is in the southwest corner of the county.

An early settler was Elijah Cornell, father of Ezra Cornell, founder of Western Union and Cornell University.
