Senior Alert Systems and Medical Alert Devices FAQ

    1. Do You want a Home-Based or Mobile System?

Originally, medical alert systems were developed to work inside your house, with your landline telephone.

And you can still go that route. Numerous companies also now use the choice of home-based systems that work over a cellular network, for those who may not have a landline.

With these systems, pressing the wearable call button allows you to talk to a dispatcher through a base unit located in your home.

Many business use mobile choices, too. You can use these systems in the house, but they’ll also allow you to call for help while you’re out and about.

These run over cellular networks and include GPS technology. This way, if you get lost or push the call button for aid however are unable to talk, the tracking service can find you.

    1. Should You Add a Fall-Detection Feature?

Some companies offer the option of automatic fall detection, for an additional monthly fee. Manufacturers say these devices sense falls when they occur and automatically contact the dispatch center, just as they would if you had pressed the call button.

    1. Whats the Cost?

Fees. Beware of complicated pricing plans and hidden fees. Look for a company with no extra fees related to equipment, shipping, installation, activation, or service and repair. Don’t fall for scams that offer free service or “donated or used” equipment.
Contracts. You should not have to enter into a long-term contract. You should only have to pay ongoing monthly fees, which should range between $25 and $45 a month (about $1 a day). Be careful about paying for service in advance, since you never know when you’ll need to stop the service temporarily (due to a hospitalization, for instance) or permanently.
Guarantee and cancellation policies. Look for a full money-back guarantee, or at least a trial period, in case you are not satisfied with the service. And you’ll want the ability to cancel at any time with no penalties (and a full refund if monthly fees have already been paid).
Discounts. Ask about discounts for multiple people in the same household, as well as for veterans, membership organizations, medical insurance or via a hospital, medical or care organization. Ask if the company offers any discount options or a sliding fee scale for people with lower incomes.
Insurance. For the most part, Medicare and private insurance companies will not cover the costs of a medical alert. In some states Medicaid may cover all or part of the cost. You can check with your private insurance company to see if it offers discounts or referrals.
Tax deductions. Check with your tax professional to find out if the cost of a medical alert is tax deductible as a medically necessary expense.

Basically a panic button is an emergency button which can be pressed in case of an emergency, whether it be a fall, or cardiovascular disease. These panic buttons can be worn around the neck or as a bracelet.

Panic buttons can be one method or 2-way. A one method panic button for the elderly will operate in one method only. The individual in distress presses a button, which sends a signal. Typically this will put an emergency call to the numbers currently programmed into the system.

Some companies enable 9 numbers to be set. Each of these 9 numbers will be called one after the other till a human is reached. In case you are wondering how a machine understands that a human has lifted the phone, then here is how it works. When an individual takes the call, he is asked to enter in a number. If the number is entered properly, then the system assumes that it is a live person and not a voice mail. The system will play the message for the individual lifting the call.

In a 2-way system, a 2-way communication is developed between the person in distress and the emergency alert service provider. This is why it is extremely important you select a trusted company. It is well worth the few additional dollars spent each month, in return for quality service and action.

Some 2-way company will offer additional service. For example some alarm companies will pull up medical records of the client to identify if he has any known medical issues. This ensures immediate service and can avoid a lot of trouble and aggravation.

Panic buttons for the senior can be worn as a bracelet, pendant or on the belt. They are generally water proof so there is no issues with the emergency alert systems getting spoiled due to wetness.

Senior Alert Systems and Medical Alert Devices FAQ

      1. Do You want a Home-Based or Mobile System?

Initially, medical alert systems were designed to work inside your home, with your landline telephone.

And you can still go that route. Lots of business also now provide the option of home-based systems that work over a cellular network, for those who might not have a landline.

With these systems, pressing the wearable call button enables you to speak with a dispatcher through a base system situated in your house.

But many companies use mobile choices, too. You can use these systems at home, but they’ll likewise permit you to call for help while you’re out and about.

These run over cellular networks and include GPS innovation. By doing this, if you get lost or press the call button for assistance however are unable to talk, the monitoring service can find you.

  • Holland Tunnel

The Holland Tunnel is a vehicular tunnel under the Hudson River. It connects Manhattan in New York City, New York, to the east, and Jersey City, New Jersey, to the west. An integral conduit within the New York metropolitan area, the Holland Tunnel is operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ). The entirety of the tunnel carries Interstate 78; the New Jersey side also carries New Jersey Route 139.

Plans for a fixed vehicular crossing over the Hudson River were first devised in 1906. However, disagreements prolonged the planning process until 1919, when it was decided to build a tunnel under the river. Construction of the Holland Tunnel started in 1920, and it opened in 1927. At the time of its opening, the Holland Tunnel was the longest continuous underwater vehicular tunnel in the world. The Holland Tunnel is one of three vehicular crossings between Manhattan and New Jersey, the others being the Lincoln Tunnel and the George Washington Bridge.

The Holland Tunnel was originally known as the Hudson River Vehicular Tunnel or the Canal Street Tunnel. It was renamed the in memory of Clifford Milburn Holland, the chief engineer, after his sudden death in 1924, before the tunnel was opened. The Holland Tunnel was the world's first mechanically ventilated tunnel; the ventilation system was designed by Ole Singstad, who oversaw completion of the tunnel's construction.

Valhalla is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) located within the town of Mount Pleasant, in Westchester County, New York, United States, in the New York City metropolitan area. Its population was 3,162 at the 2010 U.S. Census.[1] The name of the community was inspired by a fan of the opera composer Richard Wagner, and the hamlet is known both for its location as the home of the primary hospital campus of Westchester Medical Center and New York Medical College, as well as the burial place of numerous noted people. The name comes from Valhalla, a heavenly abode in Norse mythology.

Valhalla gained its name when it was necessary to name a new U.S. post office in the 19th century, due to the flooding of a pre-existing town and post office, Kensico, which is now underneath the lake created by the Kensico Dam (a part of the New York city water supply system). According to local historians and published works, the wife of a postmaster was a devoted fan of the works of the composer Richard Wagner, and she shared that composer's interest in Norse mythology. Her preference led to the choice of the name Valhalla, after the heavenly paradise of slain warriors in that mythology. It is most generally agreed that Xavier Reiter, a French horn player with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, a Wagner devotee, and who played french horn at Wagner's premier of Parsifal at Bayreuth[2], suggested that the post office name of "Valhalla" be adopted. The village still maintains its association with death through noted people who were buried in its cemeteries.

The Kensico Cemetery was founded in 1889 in Valhalla at a time when many of the cemeteries in the city of New York were filling up, and several rural cemeteries were founded near the railroads that served the metropolis. Initially 250 acres (100 ha) in size, the cemetery was expanded to 600 acres (2.4 km2) in 1905, but reduced to 460 acres (1.9 km2) in 1912, when a portion of its land was sold to the neighboring Gate of Heaven Cemetery.

Senior Alert Systems and Medical Alert Devices FAQ

      1. Do You want a Home-Based or Mobile System?

Initially, medical alert systems were designed to work inside your house, with your landline telephone.

And you can still go that route. Lots of business likewise now use the option of home-based systems that work over a cellular network, for those who may not have a landline.

With these systems, pressing the wearable call button permits you to speak with a dispatcher through a base unit located in your home.

Many companies use mobile choices, too. You can use these systems in your home, but they’ll also enable you to call for help while you’re out and about.

These run over cellular networks and include GPS technology. This way, if you get lost or push the call button for aid but are unable to talk, the tracking service can find you.
